Sofia Darivaki-Kateb was at SWOT Hospitality Management, Athens, Greece

I am in my second year of studies, enrolled on the Swiss Alpine Center and Cardiff Metropolitan University programs of study offered at City Unity Education Group in Greece.  To graduate with the Swiss Alpine Diploma in Hotel Management, we are required to complete two internship periods of 20 weeks each in the first two years of study at 5 Star hospitality enterprises.

Why I chose SWOT for my internship!

My second internship from April to September 2019 was at SWOT Hospitality which is a management and consulting company, “inspired with the vision to support owners and investors on developing innovative, intelligent, and well executed concepts in hospitality.”  It is a fast-growing, reputable company that provides a variety of services that range from Hotel Management, Sales & Marketing, Advisory, Asset & Investment Management, and Forum Organizations.

I chose SWOT as I was extremely interested in the Sales & Marketing services the company offers to hotels.  I easily adapted to my new environment as I worked closely with the management, true professionals, who made me feel welcome and comfortable from the very first day.   Not surprisingly, the founder and chairman of SWOT, George C. Constantinidis, and the Managing Partners Panagiotis Constantinidis and Nick Constantinidis are all graduates of the Alpine Center/IHTTI Switzerland.

What were my responsibilities?

 During my internship I was working as a reservation agent alongside the reservation specialist under the surveillance of the Revenue Manager and Sales Managers. I was in charge of the registration of reservations into the PMS (Perseus PMS) of a renowned property in Santorini island, managed by SWOT. Additionally, I was assigned to reply to booking queries or amendments, through emails or OTA’s.

A highlight of what I learned

During my internship at Swot Company I learned how to interact with different kinds of personalities, how to answer and reply to emails and phone calls as well as deal effectively with customers’ complaints.  To sum up, I improved my technical and communicational skills which I believe will be an asset in my chosen career in hospitality management.  I also achieved my goal of learning how the Sales & Marketing department functions, and how by working together marketers and revenue managers can significantly enhance their hotel’s bottom line.  Collaboration between these departments makes providing the right price to the right customer at the right time a reality.

What did I enjoy most about my internship?

The best part of my internship was that I had the opportunity to work with associates, managers and opening teams from properties managed by SWOT.  As a management company, every day is stimulating, with multiple tasks and challenges that must be completed. I also had the opportunity to observe the day to day tasks of Sales Managers who acted like mentors to me!  I am forever grateful to SWOT for this valuable experience they gave me.
